ALL THE EXERCISES BELOW

In this section, there are two exercises to be completed.

EXERCISE 1 | Quantify Data

This exercise requires us to logically sort data while keeping it readable, informative, and visually engaging. Since the task needed a large quantity of items and clear categories, I ended up cleaning my house thoroughly to find something suitable, and that’s when I realized I actually had many pills around me (for maintaining my health).

INFORMATION RESEARCH

DESIGN RESEARCH

I was initially inspired by this poster :

Although I do not understand Japanese, I can see how the layout has formed as well as where the information is placed. I thought about it further and I don't think I want to distract/hide the information on top of the skin like in several places of the poster because it won't be as readable.

Here’s my way of planning out the layout: a very rough and, honestly, ugly sketch. Mr. Kannan approved the idea of using pills creatively but still allowed me to decide on the final layout.

I chose this layout in the end because I wanted it to feel scientific, informative, and visually clear while still being interesting to look at.

EXERCISE 2 | L.A.T.C.H Infographic

In this exercise, the task was to design an infographic where the information and visuals clearly correlate using at least four elements: location, alphabet, time, category, and hierarchy. Although the original theme was meant to be Pokémon, I chose to adapt it to another fandom, Stardew Valley, a farming simulation game where players manage a farm and explore areas like the mines.

INFORMATION RESEARCH

For this infographic, the location element is represented by the mines, while the monsters act as the main visual and informational focus. The mine system naturally shows hierarchy through floor levels, categories through different monster types, and time through progression as players go deeper. This helps the infographic clearly guide players on what monsters to expect and what to avoid as they descend to the lowest floors.

DESIGN RESEARCH

Here are my initial inspirations found on Pinterest:

Although there is a long list of Stardew's monsters, I'll mention the most commonly known ones per zone. In the end, I decided to sort 6 monstersin total for the infographic.

Here are my sketches of layout and idea planning :

Here are the plates/bases or cave floor design illustrated and used in the final work (done in Procreate) :

IV. REFLECTION

Observations

During the first few weeks of the Information Design module, I initially felt a bit overwhelmed. We had to go through many presentations and create several infographics, which meant dealing with a large amount of data. At first, it was challenging to process and organize all that information clearly. However, I slowly realized that this is an important skill for designers. As designers, we often have to take raw or excess data and transform it into visuals that are easy to understand. It made me more aware that the role of design is not just about making something look good, but also about communicating information clearly to the audience through visuals and graphics.

Findings

One of my main findings from this exercise is how important layout, hierarchy, and information selection are in infographic design. The way information is arranged can greatly affect how easily the audience understands the content. I also learned that infographics should not be too text-heavy, because people usually look for quick and clear visual information. Instead, strong graphics and visuals should support the message. When creating my own infographics, I experimented with different topics such as medicine pills and the next one based on Stardew Valley. Through this process, I realized that choosing an interesting topic can also make the infographic more engaging and enjoyable to design.

Experiences

Overall, this experience helped me learn a lot in a short period of time. Through discussions, exercises, and presentations, I was able to better understand how to gather information, organize data, and present it visually. Even though the semester felt quite fast, the activities helped me quickly grasp the basic principles of information design. By the end of the exercise, I felt more confident in understanding how data can be simplified and structured into a clear visual format for an audience.
